Chiavari is the third largest center in the metropolitan area of Genoa, after the capital and Rapallo. Chiavari is located in the Eastern Riviera, overlooking the Ligurian Sea in the center of the Gulf of Tigullio.

The town develops on the right of the Entella river, which forms the border with Lavagna. In the western part Chiavari borders with Zoagli, while in the north, the Chiavari hinterland, with Carasco, Cogorno and Leivi.

The hilly part involves the middle and lower Fontanabuona valley, the Sturla valley, the Graveglia valley and the Aveto valley, which in the 13th century were part of the captaincy of Chiavari under the Republic of Genoa.

History
Chiavari was the site of prehistoric and Roman settlements, as evidenced by the discovery of a necropolis from the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Known by the name of Tigullia, like the rest of the area, it saw the passage of the Byzantines and the Lombards of Rotari in 641.
In the 10th century the influence of the Republic of Genoa began, which in the 12th century expanded the village, protecting it with defensive walls, in some cases still visible. The castle dates back to the same period. In 1243 it became the seat of the vicariate of the Eastern Riviera. After a brief dominion of the Fieschi di Lavagna, it was reconquered in 1332. Urban renewal began in the sixteenth century, with the construction of new noble palaces in Renaissance style. From 1648 it received the title of City from the Republic of Genoa.
At the end of the eighteenth century Napoleon subjugated Genoa and with it Chiavari, which became the capital of the Apennines department. It then followed the national events after the fall of Napoleon, the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia and then to the Kingdom of Italy.
