THE ORATORY OF THE CONFRATERNITA DEI BIANCHI OR OF SANTA CROCE

In the historic center of Monterosso, in Via Gioberti, just beyond the church of San Giovanni Battista, turning right, you come across the oratory of the Confraternita dei Bianchi or Santa Croce. Dating back to the 15th century, it owes its name to the color of the dress used by the brothers during the processions. The brotherhood remained active until the seventeenth century, managing the town's hospital and taking care of the sick.
The brotherhoods were born during the Counter-Reformation to foment works of charity. As in Monterosso, at least two brotherhoods were usually formed in each town, as evidenced by the oratory of the Confraternita dei Neri.
The characteristic façade is plastered with black and white bicrome horizontal stripes, on which opens a simple portal framed by two pilasters in classic style culminating with Corinthian capitals. Inside there is a nineteenth-century organ from the Pistoia school and a wooden choir with painted parapet.
